How to save money on your home renovation

Renovating your home is an exciting but big project. If you fail to prepare adequately for your home renovation, you can spend more than anticipated.

1. Have a clear budget

A budget should not be restrictive and should instead be viewed as a spending plan. Without a budget, you have no boundaries or guidelines within to work. This is dangerous and opens you up to spending more than you need to. If you work within a budget, it forces you to think of creative ways to work within your budget rather than exceed it.

2. Get multiple quotes

Getting multiple quotes should be standard practice when hiring services or buying goods. This is especially important when doing a home renovation because some contractors may be trying to take a chance. A good rule of thumb is to get at least three quotes for what work you need to be done. By doing this, you should be able to spot if one of the contractors is trying to rip you off. If all the quotes are in a similar price range, you are probably being quoted fairly.

3. Do your own research

Do not simply rely on what the contractors tell you about pricing and their quality of work. Where possible, do your own research. Try and find out what people who have had similar work done have paid. Additionally, try to find references for previous work done. Although this may not directly impact your pocket, it could indirectly. If the workmanship is inferior, this could lead to comebacks, resulting in disputes and extra charges. Or, worse yet, you could need to call other contractors to complete the job.

4. Do not rush

Rushing usually results in spending more money than you planned. When people are rushed, they tend not to think clearly and make rash decisions. Slowing down and thinking carefully before proceeding gives you better control over your circumstances and decision-making.

5. Communicate clearly

Clear communication with your contractors will ensure you are on the same page. Each contractor needs to know what you want to achieve, your budget, your timeline, and the result you are after. By not being clear in your communication, you leave the door open to misunderstanding and possible additional expenses where there is a communication breakdown.
